How have I only just discovered the iPhone Livejournal app? I can give you pics wherever I am now! And add names and links and cuts. Wow.

Here's a gratuitous picture of a ruined abbey behind a cut... How novel!

*puts history graduate hat on* well, of the stories of King Arthur are to be believed and there is any truth in his existence, being down south now, I technically do live near Camelot ;) *takes hat off*

The abbey shown is Netley Abbey which is one of the best preserved in the south; it was a cistercian abbey until dissolved in 1536 by Henry VIII when he granted it to a friend who turned it into a manor. It was really beautiful and peaceful. A lot of the Tudor additions were removed in the 19thc when preservationists wanted to restore what was left of the abbey not envisaging that the Tudor half would be as important one day as the medieval. It's really cool - you can find graffiti etched into the walls from as early as 1813 when it was fashionable to go and picnic in the ruins.

Very cool!
